Life as a child star can be taxing. Juggling your studies while learning acting and starring in films and shows will make anyone miserable. Plus, things can get tougher if you are dealt a sh*tty hand from the start. So many child actors have been and continue to be exploited in the industry even today. So, be it good parenting or something else, it’s always good to see actors who had somewhat of a normal life and grew up to be decent people after starting their careers as child stars.

With the recent revelation that came from Jennette McCurdy’s memoir, “I Am Glad My Mom Died” and the unfortunate death of Aaron Carter, who were both child actors, it is evident that the industry still needs to change. Although just becoming a child actor doesn’t automatically curse your life. A healthy work environment with good guidance from one’s loved ones helps a lot in this scenario. Even Asa Butterfield of Sex Education fame started his acting career as a child actor, starring in movies like Hugo, Ender’s Game, and The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas.

Chloe Grace Moretz also saw her career start when she acted as Violet in the CBS series, The Guardian for two episodes. From then on, she started to appear in more television shows and movies, slowly building her portfolio. Her major break came in 2005 when she starred opposite Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George in the horror movie, The Amityville Horror. Her performance as Chelsea Lutz was highly praised by critics, earning her the Young Artist Award nomination. Her subsequent films were mostly independent type movies, helping in nurturing her skills as an actor.

A terrifying one to watch, Suspiria (2018) is the remake of Dario Argento’s iconic horror movie of the same name. 30 Rock

One of the best sitcoms of the 2000s, along with HIMYM, Modern Family, Flight of the Conchords, and The Office. 30 Rock was a major success that catapulted the careers of Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, and Jack McBrayer into further popularity. A show inspired by Tina Fey’s own experience as a writer on SNL, the series first premiered on NBC on October 2006 and went on to create seven seasons.

As is usual with American sitcoms, the show had various recurring and non-recurring guest actors like Jason Sudeikis, Chris Parnell, and Rachel Dratch (all three SNL veterans, by the way), among many others. Chloe Grace also went on to guest star as Kaylee Hopper, granddaughter of the media mogul Hank Hopper. A 14-year-old clever teenager, she plans to destroy Jack Donaghy and become the head of Kabletown, her grandfather’s business. Funny as hell, Chloe Grace is a treat to watch here as she shows her comedy chops.

The Amityville Horror

Based on the 1977 book of the same name by Jay Anson, it is inspired by the rather infamous “paranormal” activities experienced by the Lutz family in their 112 Ocean Avenue home, which was the same place where Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his parents, two brothers, and his two sisters, and later on claiming to be possessed. This 2005 horror movie is the ninth major installment in the Amityville Horror series.

This film marks the debut of Chloe Grace Moretz in the role of Chelsea Lutz, one of the three children of the Lutz family. It also stars Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George as George and Kathy Lutz, respectively. Not the best film out there, but still enjoyable to a degree, The Amityville Horror needs a watch.

Another horror film on the list, The Eye, is a 2008 horror thriller directed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud. If you are a horror movie enthusiast, you may have seen the famous 2002 original by the Pang Brothers. This is a Hollywood remake of that film.

We follow the story of a blind violinist named Sydney Wells, played by Jessica Alba, who has a cornea transplantation done to her eyes. While she starts recovering from her surgery, she notices that she is starting to see dead people. And the story spirals down from there as things start to get worse. The Eye (2008) is a good watch if you don’t mind getting the sh*t scared at night. And if you want to double the fun and screams, watch the original too.

A nostalgia trip may hit hard with this seventh movie on this list. The 2000s was the decade of romance with movies like Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, The Notebook, Love Actually, and of course, 500 Days of Summer. Carrie (2013)

Based on the master of horror, Stephen King’s book of the same name, which was released in 1974, Carrie(2013) happens to be a remake of the Brian De Palma-directed 1976 original Carrie. While both the book and the original movie were a huge success, commercially and financially, this 2013 remake failed to hit that mark.

Kimberly Peirce helmed the direction of this movie with Chloe Grace Moretz as our protagonist, Carrie White and Julianne Moore playing her mother, Margaret White, in the lead role. It mostly stays true to the story of the book and only changes the setting so that it suits a modern audience.

The Equalizer

Few have such on-screen charisma and grandeur as Denzel Washington. From Philadelphia to The Book of Eli, the man oozes mastery over his skill. The Equalizer was his 2014 action film, directed by Antoine Fuqua of The Magnificent Seven fame.

The Equalizer is more of a vigilante-type action thriller, like John Wick and Kill Bill. It follows Robert McCall, a quiet and mysterious guy who decides to take matters into his own hands when he notices Teri (played by Chloe Grace), a teenage prostitute who he befriended early on bruised and manhandled. If you want Denzel Washington slow-gazing his way through a horde of bad guys while he brutally breaks necks and legs, you need to see this movie.

Let Me In

This Matt Reeves-directed horror comedy is a remake of the Swedish film, Let The Right One In, which was released in 2008. By the way, if you are wondering if this is the same director as Batman (2022), then you are right. After doing the found-footage film, Cloverfield in 2008, which went on to receive rave reviews for its narrative and style, Let Me In was the next movie he directed.

Like Carrie(2013), Let Me In tries its best not to divert from its source as much as possible. Director Matt Reeves, who also wrote the screenplay of the movie, had to change the setting to New Mexico and alter the names of the two leads to reach a wider audience.

The story film revolves around a 12-year-old bullied boy named Owen, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, who has made friends with a mysterious girl named Abby, who only comes out at night to meet him. Chloe Grace plays the role of Abby here, and she is great in this one. People who have enjoyed the original 2008 one will not be disappointed with this English remake.

Released in 2021, Mother/Android was directed by first-time director Mattson Tomlin.
