Nobels from far and wide want to marry her, but Kaguya isn’t so easily swayed. She hands them grand tasks to complete and says that she will be the wife of the one who completes his quest. The acclaimed British actor, Sir Christopher Lee, also had a small role in the movie, passing three after starring in it.

The story of Dark Shadows mainly revolves around Barnabas Collins, played by Johny Depp, who has been turned into a vampire and trapped in a coffin after breaking the heart of a witch named Angelique. Two hundred years later, he is freed, thanks to a construction crew working at the place where he was buried. Now free and yearning for revenge, Barnabas first needs to get his house in order. Gothic as ever with some great visuals, Dark Shadows might not be Tim Burton’s masterpiece, but it sure is one of his underappreciated movies.

Hugo

One legendary director after another in this list, Hugo is a fantasy adventure drama with Martin Scorsese in the director’s chair. Very different from his usual gangster tough guy films, Scorsese, even outside of his comfort zone, delivers a praise-worthy film. Released in November 2011, it went on to receive 11 Academy Award nominations and won five. A testament to Scorsese’s directorial vision and passion for filmmaking.

The movie is an adaptation of the popular illustrator Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret. John Logan, the screenwriter behind critically acclaimed movies like Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, Spectre and Skyfall, also served as the screenwriter behind this one. Hugo takes place in Paris in the 1930s, where a boy named Hugo Cabret, played by Asa Butterfield, lives alone with his drunk uncle after the passing of his father in a fire. The orphaned boy’s dream is to repair the broken automaton his father left him before his death and solve the mystery behind it.

Hick

Another movie that’s based on a famous book of the same name, Hick stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Eddie Redmayne, Ray McKinnon, Juliette Lewis, Blake Lively, Alec Baldwin, and Rory Culkin as its major casts. It was directed by Derick Martini with a screenplay by Andrea Portes, author of the book Hick is based on.

Chloe Grace Moretz acts as the main lead in the film, whose character, Luli McCullen, a 13-year-old runaway, is hitching a ride to go to Vegas. On her way, she meets with Eddie, played by Eddie Redmayne, the guy she is hitching from, and Glenda, played by Blake Lively. Soon things don’t turn out the same way she hoped, and Luli entangles herself in a messy situation. The movie, while not as great as the book, has its charm and merits. Just be mindful of some disturbing content in the film.

Jack and the Beanstalk

Everyone had read about the nursery tale of Jack and the beanstalk that grew as high as the sky when they were wee little lads. Director Gary J. Tunnicliffe turned that story into a 2009 comedy movie with help from screenwriters Flip Kobler and Cindy Marcus.

This version of the tale has been slightly altered to mix well with modern themes and elements. Besides that, it remains largely identical to the original 1734 one. Jack and the Beanstalk feature a large cast of characters and stars James Earl Jones, Colin Ford, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Lloyd, Gilbert Gottfried, and others. A fun and light-hearted tale, Jack and the Beanstalk do what it’s supposed to do – make the viewer laugh.

Family Plan

Released in 2005 on the Hallmark Channel, Family Plan marks the feature film debut of Chloe Grace Moretz. As a child actor, her time in the movie is quite brief as she acts as the younger self of the main character. This TV film was directed by the late stuntman and director David S. Cass Sr.

Tori Spelling stars as the protagonist Charlie, a career-driven woman with ambitions of her own, alongside Greg Germann as her boss, Walcott. As with any other hallmark movie, Family Plan is a laid-back movie that you put on a Sunday afternoon when you just want to unwind.

Texas Killing Fields

Chloe Grace Moretz in Texas Killing Fields

Written by Don Ferrarone and directed by Ami Canaan Maan, daughter of prominent director Michael Mann, Texas Killing Fields is a 2011 crime drama film. Danny Boyle, the man behind films like Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting, was set to direct this one but backed out due to some issues. And so the title went to Ami Canaan Mann.

Sam Worthington and Jeffrey Dean Morgan act as the main lead of the film, playing Detective Mike Souder and Brian Heigh, respectively. Their town is being terrorized by a serial killer who ups his game when he kidnaps Anne Sliger, played by Chloe Grace, making the two detectives reach for clues before another body is found. With a solid cast that gives a solid performance, Texas Killing Fields is not for the faint of heart.

The Poker House

This one is very painful. The Poker House is directed by Lori Petty and retells the story of her childhood. The movie was released in September 2008 but had a limited run. It stars Jennifer Lawrence, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Selma Blair in the lead role.

The Poker House is set in the 1970s and follows fourteen-year-old Agnes, played by Jennifer Lawrence, as she tries to take care of her two younger sisters, Bee and Cammie. Their mother is an alcoholic and a prostitute who has no interest in raising her three daughters. Surrounded by criminals and an uncaring mother, life is tough for Agnes and her sisters. Her situation is turned even grimmer when she is raped by her mother’s pimp. With no future for her or her sisters, Agnes has to now choose what to do.

Red Shoes and The Seven Dwarfs

Same to The Tale of Princess Kaguya, Red Shoes and Seven Dwarfs is a foreign-language computer-animated movie. Created in South Korea by Locus Corporation, with Sung-ho Hong serving as both the writer and director of this movie, it saw its release in July 2019.

The movie is based on the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs fairy tale with a modern twist. Chloe Grace, Patrick Warburton, Jim Rash, and Gina Gershon lend their voices to this goofy tale of seven green dwarfs and an overweight princess. Perfect for a family fun time, Red Shoes and The Seven Dwarfs is a perfectly packaged fairy tale parody.

Brain on Fire

This 2016 Chloe Grace starrer is a biographical movie about journalist Susanah Cahalan’s misdiagnosis and her struggles. It’s also based on her New York Times best-selling memoir, Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness. A journalist by profession for New York Post, Susanah was declared psychotic by her doctors, which later turned out to be a misdiagnosis.

In the film, Susannah Cahalan starts hearing voices along with a spur of strange behavior after she gets sick. As time progresses, her job as a writer in the New York Post suffers from her condition too. This prompts Susannah to seek out medical help, which leads to her getting misdiagnosed by the doctors. Now, only a few instances away from being admitted into a psych ward, it’s up to one doctor to help her. Touching and eye-opening, Brain on Fire manages to handle a sensitive subject quite well.

Dark Places

A mystery-thriller directed by Gilles Pacquet-Brenner, the movie was released in the US on August 2015 by A24 as a limited theatrical run. Adapted from a book of the same name, written by Gillian Flynn, it has Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Chloe Grace Moretz, Tye Sheridan, and Christina Hendricks in the lead roles.

Dark Places follows two timelines – one in the present day and another in 1985. Libby Day (Charlize Theron) was a victim of homicide committed by her brother when she was just an eight-year-old girl. After losing her mother and two elder sisters, Libby at present lives on the donation people send her, but that source is drying up fast. Soon she is approached by a man named Lyle Wirth, who runs a “True Crime” club.

He wants her to participate in his research and appear at his club to answer some questions about her late family and life, which Libby declines at first. However, after some convincing, she accepts the offer on the condition he pays her seven hundred dollars. As Libby uncovers more about the case and her brother, she starts to question her testimony which leads to Ben, her brother, getting arrested and sentenced. A proper adaption of Gillian Flynn’s story, Dark Places, is a recommended viewing.

Clouds of Sils Maria

Written and directed by Oliver Assayas, Clouds of Sils Maria happens to be a multinational production, namely French, Swiss and German. It’s a 2014 drama that focuses on an actress’s struggle with insecurity. The film was critically acclaimed, winning several awards, including a Cesar Award for Best Supporting Actress by Kristen Stewart, a first for an American actress to do so.

Taking place in the mountains of Sils Maria, Switzerland, the film centers around a famous middle-aged actress, Maria Enders, played by Juliette Binoche, whose role as Sigrid in the movie Maloja Snake cast her into the limelight. Now, twenty years later, she is approached by a prominent theater director who wants to revive the original play and offers Maria a role as Helena, Sigrid’s older lover in the play who takes her own life, according to Maria’s view of the ending.

Kristen Stewart’s character Valentine serves as Maria’s assistant, while Chloe Grace plays an American actress named Jo-Ann Ellis who has a history of massive scandals. A very deep and thoughtful watch, Clouds of Sils Maria deserves the wide acclaim it received.

Laggies

Premiering in 2014 at the Sundance Film Festival, Laggies is a rom-com involving Keira Knightley, Sam Rockwell, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Ellie Kemper. Directed by the late Lynn Shelton and Andrea Seigel as the screenwriter, it received favorable reviews from the critics, who mainly praised the performances of the cast and its direction.

In Laggies, we follow Megan, a woman in her mid-twenties going through a quarter-life crisis as she realizes she doesn’t really have any goals in her life and is still in a relationship with her high school boyfriend. It also doesn’t help the fact that her boyfriend proposes to her at her friends wedding out of the blue.

Fed up with all these, she decides to stay at a young teenage girl’s house who she had made friends with previously. Annika, Megan’s teenage friend, however, fails in her methods and is caught by her father, Craig. And everything starts to get out of control as Craig develops feelings for Megan while she remains unsure about her marriage.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post

Chloe Grace Moretz gives her best performance in this 2018 coming-of-age teen movie based on Emily M. Danforth’s 2012 novel of the same name. The movie deals with heavy topics like Gay Conversion Therapy and LGBTQ+ freedom. Desiree Akhavan directed the film and wrote its screenplay with Cecilia Frugiuele.

Taking place in the 1990s, we follow Cameron Post, a teenage girl living with her aunt after the death of her parents. After she is seen having sex with Corey Taylor, her girlfriend, by Cameron’s boyfriend, Aunt Ruth decides to send her niece to a gay conversion therapy center. Run by brother and sister duo, Dr. Lydia Marsh and Reverend Rick, the center is known as God’s Promise.

There Cameron makes friends with Jane Fonda and Adam Red Eagle, two teenagers like her who don’t believe in the center’s work. As she tries to adapt to her environment, several major incidents impact her life there and her friends. The Miseducation of Cameron Post is witty, charming, bittersweet, and, most of all – understanding. A must-watch in every regard.

Kick Ass

While Chloe Grace’s other ventures were very fruitful, it was her role as Hit Girl in the 2010 action-comedy Kick-Ass that catapulted her career’s rise. Adapted from Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s similarly named comic, Kick-Ass stars Aaron Taylor Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasee, Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong, and Chloe Grace Moretz as the main cast. Since its release, the movie has turned into a cult classic for its unapologetic portrayal of superhero movies and no-nonsense style.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, Kick-Ass is about a nerdy teenager named Dave Lizewski who fights crime without having any powers or so and calls himself “Kick-Ass”. After a while, his crime-fighting ways reach the ears of a father-daughter superhero duo called Big Daddy and Hit Girl. The two are on a mission to kill Frank D’Amico, who was responsible for Big Daddy’s downfall as a cop, which led to his wife committing suicide. Another mysterious superhero called Red Mist joins them in their fight as things start to get complicated. Dark, original, and fun, Kick-Ass is what you need to watch if you have become tired of Marvel and DC’s superhero formula.

Kick-Ass 2

Sometimes things are just so damn good that you want seconds. The reception of Kick-Ass was so great that it prompted a sequel, called Kick-Ass 2 which was released in 2013. Matthew Vaughn didn’t return as director for this one, making way for Jeff Wadlow to direct the sequel and write the screenplay. The three main casts from the previous movie reprised their roles, with Jim Carrey and John Leguizamo joining for new roles.

Kick-Ass 2’s events take place four years after the first one as we see Dave retire and Mindy try to live a normal life. Chris D’Amico, Red Mist in Kick-Ass, however, is still planning to kill his arch-nemesis. Now that he is the head of his father’s business, Chris makes a supervillain gang of his own called Toxic Mega c*nts. Furthermore, he dons the supervillain name, The Motherf*cker. Time’s running short for Dave and Mindy as The Motherf*cker is out for retribution and will go to any lengths to see them dead. More brutal and savage, Kick-Ass 2 continues that dark superhero fun.
