Who can argue that there’s nothing better than taking down a particularly tough Skagg in Borderlands or Raid Boss in Destiny 2, only to then see it drop a big pile of loot that's an exotic or legendary class? They offer a massive amount of personalization that lets you feel like your character is your own. It’s a subtle touch that really immerses you and draws you into the world. The hardest part is just deciding where to sink all your free time. So to help smooth that process out, here’s an updated look at the best Looter Shooter games out now.

Ruin Dog

Rama Studio have taken things to the very far future. Humanity is in a golden era and they spend their centuries watching shows featuring live hunts of aliens. You play as a humble alien or bot sent out into the arena to fend for yourself on a put on one hell of a show.

There’s a bunch of unique monsters and bosses to blast and to survive it all you’ll need to mix, match, and upgrade your guns and gear to last to those higher levels. Nowhere is safe, but each character has their own skills and abilities to keep them alive across the various colorful, futuristic, and deadly worlds you’ll encounter.

Ants Took My Eyeball

A 2D platformer meets Looter Shooter from Bosmic Forge, Ants Took My Eyeball is a sleeper hit you should stick on your radar. The concept is simple, the Ants have your eye, go get it back using whatever you can find, be that gun, bat, and everything in between.

Combat is fast and filled with insects, the levels are procedural, there’s loot literally everywhere and progress is permanent as there’s pseudo-base building. Plus, if you fancy some company there’s co-op available for up to four people at once, so you can really let out some group anger on those pesky Ants.

Noita

A magical and at times brutal rogue-lite adventure into the Abyss, Noita is all about one thing, wand building. But this is far from your Harry Potter twee crafting scene, this is Noita where your biggest concern is how big you like your collateral damage to be.

There’s a near-infinite combination of wands to find and each one can be tweaked with spells in any arrangement you like, although you’ll need to buy the incantations first. Plus, to get those wands you’ll have to climb, crawl and float through endless tunnels of terror filled with all sorts of environmental hazards and weird creatures. Death means a full restart, so watch where you tread and try not to blow yourself up.

OMFG: One Million Fatal Guns

A Looter Shooter from Gun Hit Wonders that strips it all back to the basics, One Million Fatal Guns has a simple premise, shoot bots, don’t die, get guns. Which works incredibly well for it.

There are over 30 million weapons according to the devs and you’ll wield most of them as you clear out a Space Station that’s been hijacked by robots. Last as long as you can, find some weird weapons, and try to set a high score. It’s not too complicated and enjoyable for a few hours of mindless action, gunplay, and score-attack stylings.

Unturned

A game sporting a lot of Roblox energy, Unturned from Smartly Dressed Games is a Zombie survivor game that meets Looter Shooter that’s been surprisingly popular with the gaming community. Society is ruined, blocky Zombies roam the lands and you’re a blocky-shaped person just trying to survive in it all.

Loot shelters for supplies, approach each interaction with the Undead how you like, craft, forage, and hunt whilst having to deal with other players as there’s plenty of PvP to be had. There are a lot of unique in-game events to keep things alive and interesting, plus a healthy amount of base building to keep the Doomsday Preppers satisfied.

The Brew Barons

A Ghibli-esque world of bi-planes and giant steamships, The Brew Barons from Lifetap Studios blends dogfights with open-world exploration and running a Berry Brewery. It’s a unique blend that’s satisfying to play as you soar around the skies in fights or hunting for the next harvestable spot.

Pirate organizations rule the skies and the Brewery trade and it’s up to you to make your mark in this cruel world. Your plane is highly customizable and there are plenty of parts that come with their own unique traits and bonuses. Plus there’s plenty of loot to pick up on your adventures around the world and a bar to run back at home.

Godsvivors

An action-packed blend of Vampire Survivors and Enter The Gungeon, Godsvivors from Titan is a fast-paced rogue-lite game that devolves into a bullet hell shooter incredibly quickly. At your fingertips are a multitude of deadly and downright odd weaponry, all in the hands of one of seven from an entire pantheon of Greek Gods.

They all come with their own unique traits and bonuses that you’ll need to take advantage of in order to stay alive for the 15-minute time limit. There are massive classic Greek monsters as bosses and the games pretty cheap as well so it’s ideal if you’re on a tight budget.

Magicraft

Test your arcane blending abilities in Magicraft from Wave Game. This simple yet incredibly spooky roguelike looter shooter presents you with various dark worlds to explore with the combining of magical spells you find along the way your only defense.

It is Early Access but the game regularly gets big beefy patches from the devs and there’s a Discord to join to track its progress if you’re still not sold. Each run brings random results and there are plenty of creative puzzles to encounter as you blast your way through each dungeon.

The Light Brigade

An immersive VR game from Funktronic Labs, The Light Brigade is a tactical fantasy shooter that puts a fun realistic yet still quite arcadey spin on things. You join the Light Brigade, Humanity’s last line against the darkness and it’s up to you to turn the tide for the forces of good.

Wield World War Two era weaponry in tense gun fights against all sorts of soldiers, ghouls, and brutal bosses. There’s everything from old bolt actions to six shooters, semi-automatics, submachine guns, and full auto big boy guns. Each one has realistic loading and you can even use magic whilst you do. There’s a big mystery at the bottom of everything and a near-infinite road in front of you.

Nienix: Cosmic Warfare

There’s a lost legendary artifact known as Nienix, the galaxy is awash in conflict and you, or a group of friends will need to try and survive out there in that violent void. The galaxy is massive and it’s a complete open playground that comes with some RPG mechanics and physics-based combat.

Space drifting strafe runs are encouraged and to make you better at fighting there are endless customizations on offer from parts and other bits of loot dropped from quests, enemies, and as rewards for other tasks. Everything is on offer from soaring around in a small fighter to cruising deep space in a massive battle barge with a fleet at your disposal. Tame the Galaxy your way or bring in your buds and run riot, there’s endless choice in this space-based looter shooter.

Dreadhunter

An intense sci-fi shooter from Trickster Arts, Dreadhunter is a top-down twin-stick shooter that’s oozing in cyberpunk style with a mild mix of body horror. It’s an Early Access game with a lot of promise and it drops you into the role of a mech-suited warrior that has to slay strange insectoid horrors from beyond the stars.

These chittering creatures come at you in large hordes and if you don’t keep your guns and gear upgraded you’ll be overwhelmed fast. There’s a satisfying mix of ranged and melee combat that can lend itself to your build variety quite well and to top it all off there are some absolutely massive bosses waiting for you to slap the evil out of at the end of each zone. Everything is procedural, including the weapons, so there’s tons of replayability to each run.

Survivor Mercs

A Vampire Survivors-inspired game with a twist, Survivor Mercs has you assembling a squad of cloned soldiers instead of building your character on the fly in order to help you blast apart the unending waves of enemies. It’s a simple and satisfying Early Access game from Wolpertinger Games that takes a familiar and fun format and then gave it their own unique twist.

The world is threatened by evil Corporations that have a seemingly endless supply of robot minions at their disposal and it’s your job to make a sizeable dent in that clanking legion. Every Commander you jump into combat with comes with their own unique mechanics and abilities and the soldiers you can get in your squad come with some pretty solid special abilities. There are big bosses to beat, loot that needs extracting and a customizable Bunker HQ to tool around with, so there’s plenty that sets Survivor Mercs aside from the rest.

Risk Of Rain Returns

A remastered classic that’s definitely worth revisiting, Risk of Rain Returns from Hopoo Games brought back the iconic roguelite classic and gave it an absolutely brilliant makeover. Delve into Petrichor V and find the vast amounts of loot and treasure that are hidden away and closely guarded by all sorts of roaming monsters.

It features 15 Survivors that comes with their own unique abilities, boons, and benefits for playing as them as well as a reworked multiplayer that adds all sort of anarchy to an already chaotic game. Recover Artifacts that add Mutators to your run and take on some absolutely gigantic and deadly boss creatures, if you’re a fan of the original, the rework is definitely worth checking out.

Battle Shapers

A frenetic and fast-paced sci-fi shooter from Metric Empire, Battle Shapers is an Early Access game with a lot of style and bright neon everywhere you look. You play as Ada, a cybernetic one-woman army that has to reclaim New Elysium from robotic Overlords. Each of which is unique and has a lot of personality, and powerful upgrades for taking them down.

To keep your trigger finger happy there are hordes of bots to blast through with plenty of power-ups to grab and alternate paths up the tower to explore for more rewards. The soundtrack is a banging rock mix that will keep your head bobbing and to make your runs easier there’s a bunch of abilities and talents to permanently boost your particular build.

Pixel Gun Master

Transformed and trapped as a demonic yet adorable husky, Pixel Gun Master is an adorable yet surprisingly highly customizable Early Access roguelike looter shooter from Hypercube. There’s an almost unending onslaught of monsters and strange creatures to cut through, but the choice of weaponry you use is completely up to you.

Once you grab a gun you can enhance and tweak everything from its base stats to its various components and attachments right down to the barrel, muzzle, grip, scope, stock, and more. So you can create some powerful pistols, spine-shattering shotguns and SMGs, or cartoonish-looking creations that chaotically wipe the field of your foes. There are extra characters to unlock and big beastly bosses to beat, so you’ve got plenty to keep you busy.

The Secret Pyramid VR

Explore ancient Egyptian tombs in VR with The Secret Pyramid. This roguelite adventure game lets you explore ever-changing rooms beneath a looming Pyramid. Deep beneath the sands lie riches and rewards, but there are plenty of dangerous creatures and traps that will cut your expedition violently short.

To help you get through to the rewards at the end of your trials there are unique weapons, artifacts, and special abilities that can be combined in different and creative ways. Such as debuffing a bunch of monsters, activating bullet time, and then spraying them with an exotic weapon like the Gravity Gun. With each trip being completely different, there’s a lot to dig up in the Secret Pyramid.

AK-xolotl

A cute and cartoonish roguelike that'll keep you coming back for more, AK-xolotl is an anarchic top-down shooter that'll keep your itchy trigger finger active. Take control of an adorable and heavily armed Axolotl as you explore different biomes and battle an army of menacing forest critters.

Rescue and raise other baby Axolotls to gain new abilities for your next run. There are plenty of weapons to blast apart those aggressive animals and memorable boss fights to cap off your adventures in each area. There are permanent stat-improving recipes to find and mighty power-ups that will make every run distinct, the anarchy never ends with AK-xolotl.

Arcadegeddon

A co-op multiplayer looter shooter that carries big Fortnite energy, Arcadegeddon is a high-energy third-person action game that does not let you sit still for a second. Dubbed an ever-evolving arcade shooter, your task is to take on a cybernetic virus that’s been injected into a game of the local arcade owner.

There’s an army of robotic minions standing in your path and plenty of loot, cosmetics, and weaponry to unlock and mess around with as you blast through its bright neon-lit biomes. There’s a surprising amount of build versatility once you sink some time in and there are elements of PvP for those who like to flex their shooter skills.

Captains Of The Wacky Waters

A light-hearted romp on the high seas, Captains Of The Wacky Waters is a pirate-themed jaunt on the open waves as you seek out treasure and a pathway to Heaven. This cutesy roguelite from Ceiling Games puts you in the role of a Ship Captain as you seek out safer shores.

Giant creatures and hostile pirates sail these waters so safe passage is not going to come easy. To keep your ship from sinking there’s a plethora of unique weapons to pick up, ghost crew to rescue, and gadgets that can upgrade and overhaul your ship. Plus there are new unlockable ships with powerful moves of their own that you can unlock as well as cosmetics. So there’s plenty to play with on those Wacky Waters.

Starseige: Deadzone

An Early Access FPS that will have you on the edge of your seat, Starseige: Deadzone puts you in tight corridors of cramped derelict spaceships drifting through space. In search of resources, you and your squad of up to three have to board these vessels, take out their crew, and strip it of its valuables.

Each ship's interior is procedurally generated and the rewards and threats inside will be different and deadlier each time around. There are traps, Raiders, and other anomalies onboard, you’re also on a clock as the vessel is constantly deteriorating and it won’t take long until it falls apart. As an extra incentive, it's free-to-play, so it's at least worth trying out.
